Your Guide to Moving to Vancouver

When many people think of Canada, Vancouver is the city that they are imagining. Nestled between the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Vancouver has been blessed with an abundance of beauty and natural wonder. When you are moving to Vancouver, this will be your backyard.

However, Vancouver is more than just nature and beauty. It’s also a world-class city, with lots to do. When moving to Vancouver, you can expect to be presented with lots of options. Whether you are a music lover, sports fan, foodie, art connoisseur, or anything in between, you will find your place when moving to Vancouver.

To help those who are moving to Vancouver, MoveBuddy is happy to offer this guide of helpful things to know before relocating to Vancouver.

A livable and healthy city

The biggest reason that so many people are interested in moving to Vancouver is that the city consistently ranks as among the most livable in North America. Densely populated and easy to navigate, Vancouver allows people to get out and explore.

With well-maintained running, hiking, and biking options, it’s almost impossible to move to Vancouver and not feel compelled to start a fitness routine! That’s probably why the city ranks as Canada’s fittest city.

Escape the winter

Canadians are a hardy bunch when it comes to winter. We know how to dress for the elements and generally just get on with it when things start to get cold.

That doesn’t mean that everyone likes it though. Believe it or not, there are some Canadians that prefer milder temperatures. For those Canadians, moving to Vancouver is a great option. With a mean temperature of about 4C and highs of as much as 10C normal in winter, Vancouver is truly the city in Canada that winter forgot!

…or embrace the winter!

Of course, there’s plenty of snow to go around, if that’s what you are looking for. You just have to make the short journey to find some of the best skiing and snowboarding in not just Canada, but the world.

The North Shore “local mountains” are Grouse Mountain, Cypress Mountain and Mount Seymore. These options are close enough to be able to enjoy for a half day or after work. They are also beginner-friendly while offering the experienced skier/snowboarder plenty of challenges.

If you are looking to make a day of it, then you are only about a two-hour trip away from Whistler-Blackcomb. Home of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Whistler-Blackcomb is considered the best resort in North America and offers world-class skiing and snowboarding options.

If that doesn’t convince you to give winter a chance, you can always wait until the snow melts. You’ll find amazing golf and world-class mountain biking in Whistler-Blackcomb during the summer months.

Go Canucks Go!

The fastest way to integrate yourself into the city when moving to Vancouver is to get yourself a Vancouver Canucks jersey and start to cheer the local hockey heroes on to victory.

For more than 50 years now, Vancouver’s heartbeat can be linked to the hockey team that calls the city home. With some of the most loyal and passionate fans in the National Hockey League, you will want to experience going to a Canucks game.

If hockey isn’t your thing, then there are other sports teams to cheer on. The city is a soccer hotbed and home of the Vancouver Whitecaps of Major League Soccer. Canadian Football Fans will cheer on the B.C. Lions to victory. This is in addition to World Cup skiing, snowboarding, and Mountain Biking that takes place every year in Whistler.

The sports fan will be well served when moving to Vancouver.

Vancouver chill

There’s just something about that Mountain Air. Vancouver is a city that is famous for having a laid-back attitude about life. That’s not to say that they don’t get things done – the 2010 Olympics are still remembered fondly by all Canadians – but those who call Vancouver home also know how to chill, relax, and take it easy.

So, when moving to Vancouver make sure to take a moment to reflect upon the fact that you are living in paradise.
