Is there anything worse than being in the middle of a task and suddenly realizing that you just don’t have the right tools?
It’s infuriating! And, worse, it can cause you to try and work around it in a way that ends up costing you even more time than it would take to have just stopped and gone out to get what you needed.
Human nature is to think you can get away with it though. For instance, imagine you’re hanging a print in your bedroom and you realize that you don’t have a drywall plug. What are you going to do? You should stop and drive to the nearest hardware store to buy one, but you might think that the print’s not that heavy and that you don’t really need it.
So, you hang it anyway.
Those of you reading that are handy are cringing at the thought because you know how it’s going to turn out (edit: Don’t hang a print on drywall without a drywall plug. Unless you want to learn how to repair a hole in your drywall). However, this situation wouldn’t arise if you simply had the right tools and supplies at your disposal when you were doing the task.
When your moving, you can face the same dilemma. You might think you have everything that you need, but you’d be surprised at what you might forget.
We’re here to help. This article is a guide to all the moving supplies that you might never have thought of getting and will be thankful to have when Moving Day comes around!
Label everything.
No, you don’t understand. Everything.
Having moving labels on every box will make unpacking so much easier. It can help your movers put the boxes in the proper room and can help those unpacking – whether they be professionally, or with friends and family -- get things to where they need to be quicker.
Finally, you can ensure you don’t forget things as labels will help you create an inventory of all of your belongings.
Moving is a dirty process. Dust and debris are constantly getting kicked up and your belongings are getting set on the ground and on truck beds. That means mud and dirt can get on your stuff.
Some of that can’t be helped and will be addressed with a good cleaning when you get it safely in the new location. There are items that you can’t get dirty. Chief among them is your mattress. You want to make sure that it is as protected as possible throughout the move.
You do that with a mattress bag. The specially designed bags keep the dirt outside where it belongs. As a bonus, the bags also have handles to make carrying the mattress easier.
You don’t just want to wrap your mattress. Anything with material should be protected.
Plastic wrap can be used in multiple ways. You can secure drawers, providing a layer of protection for breakable items, and provide protection from debris.
Even if you are using professional movers, you will still be moving heavy things around your space. That can be challenging even for the most young and fit people. So, you should make sure you have the equipment, like a dolly, that can assist you in moving heavy items around the space.
This will not only save you time, but it could also save you from injury.
…stuffing newspaper into the empty space isn’t enough to prevent your glasses and dishes from breaking. There are specialized dish savers and glass pack kits that are inexpensive (as low as $5 a unit) and can save you a lot of stress when packing breakables.
A small outlay at the start can also save you a tonne down the road as you won’t have to run out and replace broken items.
And the hardest if you don’t have the right tool. A must have for any move is a good box cutter. Otherwise, you’ll have to tear boxes open and risk the integrity of them as you unpack.
Once all the boxes are into your new home, you can take a box cutters and quickly open the top of each box, while making sure the box label stays in tack. That will make the unpacking process much quicker.
The box cutter can also be used to break down material after you’ve finished unpacking it to allow for you to more easily recycle it.
