Safely Packing Your Glass And China For A Move

Plates & Dishes

Packing supplies: Packing paper, tape, cardboard box

Create a workstation in your kitchen with a stack of packing paper placed in the middle then follow these steps:

  1. Place the first plate on one half of the packing paper, pull the opposite half of the packing paper over the plate.
  2. Stack the next plate on top of the covered plate and wrap the next plate with the opposite side of the packing paper like in step 1.
  3. Continue as needed for up to 5 plates in a row.  Then proceed to wrap the edges of the packing paper over the middle of the plates.
  4. Turn the stacked plates upside down and rewrap the entire set of plates. Two sheets of packing paper, folded one corner at a time and finally taped to secure the wrapping.
  5. Place the wrapped plates in the moving box, so they are standing vertically on the edge of the plates.

Pro Tip: Find any flatware items in your kitchen and pack them in the same manner. Smaller dishes such as butter dishes or saucers can be stacked in this manner within a larger bundle.

Pots & Pans

Packing supplies: Packing paper, tape, cardboard box

Pots and pans should be packed in a medium sized box and generally a few can be stacked on top of each other. Ensure the packing paper is large enough to line the entire interior of the largest pot or pan being packed. The following steps will guide you through packing pots and pans:

  1. Pick your largest pot or pan being packed and line the interior with two sheets of packing paper.
  2. Place the next item inside the first pan and repeat lining the interior with more packing paper.
  3. Repeat this process until you’ve stacked what you can.
  4. Turn the pans upside down situated in the middle of your packing paper.
  5. Grab three sheets of packing paper from each corner and wrap it to cover the pans like a present. Seal with tape so the bundle doesn’t come apart.

Glasses & Stemware

Packing supplies: Packing paper, tape, cardboard box

Where possible, use cardboard dividers to pack your glassware. If you can’t source any, here are some options when it comes to packing your glassware.

  1. If you don’t have dividers, wrap each individual glassware in a sheet of paper. Stack the glassware in the box like you would stack them in your cabinet.
  2. If you have dividers, pack your glassware in each compartment. For glasses that don’t fill to the top of each divider, add crushed packing paper to keep it from sliding out.
  3. For glassware with stemware, wrap them the same as glasses and place them one at a time standing upright in the moving box.

Pro Tip: Always use a couple of small packing sheets crushed down between each glassware for protective lining.
