Getting excited about a move to Halifax!

MoveBuddy is here to help with its guide to moving to Halifax, Nova Scotia

For many, the call to the Maritimes can be hard to ignore.

Maybe they have family in Atlantic Canada. Perhaps they fondly remember summer vacations spent on Canada’s East Coast. Or, they could just be attracted to the friendly people or the lower cost of living in Nova Scotia.

Whatever the reason they are looking to move to Halifax, the gem of Atlantic Canada will likely provide it.

When you move to Halifax, you will find it to be a small city with big attractions. It’s a place where you can find first-rate entertainment, alongside some of the most stunning nature in the country.

Indeed, Halifax has something for nearly everyone. To help those moving to Halifax, MoveBuddy is happy to offer this guide of helpful things to know before relocating to Halifax.

Lobster time!

Being a port city, Halifax is known for its fresh seafood. You can experience some of the best fish dishes you’ll ever taste year-round when you move to Halifax.

However, the undisputed highlight of the Halifax culinary scene is the lobster.

Atlantic Lobster season peaks twice a year. You will experience the freshest and best Atlantic Lobsters in the spring and the winter.

For the best experience, find a Lobster Dinner event in Halifax, or in any of the small communities just outside the city. There you will be treated to a unique Maritime tradition – one that you will leave with your belly full!

A town to learn in

Halifax is a city that embraces higher education. You will find no fewer than six universities in the city.

They include Dalhousie University (referred to as “Dal” by the locals), Saint Mary’s University (That’s Smoo, it rhymes with Goo), Mount St. Vincent University, the arts and design school of NSCAD, historic King’s College and the French-language Uniersité Sainte-Anne.

Add three Nova Scotia Community College campuses and Halifax is certainly a town to learn in!

Sociable!

As with any town with that many universities and colleges (not to mention tourists), Halifax is a town that likes to have a good time.

The downtown has something for everyone. If you want to dance, you can grove to the latest EDM until the sun comes up. If you want something a little lower key, there are plenty of pubs to share a drink with old friends and new in.

Looking for live music? You’re in luck. Halifax has one of the best music scenes in Canada. When you move to Halifax, be prepared to get out of the house and social!

A city born from the sea

When you move to Halifax you will learn that it is a city that is deeply connected to the water. For generations, people came to the city from afar by boat. Sometimes they were coming from trade and sometimes they came to start a new life, but whatever the commonality was they arrived by the sea.

The city celebrates that, by acknowledging both the positives and occasional challenge that has arisen from the ocean’s unforgiving nature.

You’ll have a Whale of a time

When you move to Halifax, you don’t just appreciate the ocean. No, you also get out on it to enjoy it.

The city features many ways to enjoy the ocean. There are multiple options for whale watching Better even, you can get closer to sea life by renting or buying a sea kayak.

Or, coolest of all, grab yourself a surfboard and get involved in the East Coast surf scene!

Regardless of your preference, it’s easy to get active on the water when you move to Halifax.
