Checklist For Critical Documents Required When Moving: Part 1

The moving process can be a thrilling experience - organizing and decorating your new home, getting to know your neighbourhood, and nestling into a new space.

However, some responsibilities must be taken care of when moving to ensure the moving process goes as smoothly as possible.

Documentation is required to do just about anything in our society, and moving is no different. So, collecting all necessary documentation is a must when selling, buying, or moving.

Because your to-do checklist for moving will probably be rather extensive, you may forget a few of the more important documents you will require. We have compiled a list with all of the critical documents you’ll need to help simplify your move.

Moving Documents

When you have finally decided on your new home and signed the contract with the movers, they will provide numerous documents like an estimate and inventory list. You will have to revert back to these documents throughout the move, so it is good to keep them handy.

Financial Documents

Before moving, collect all of the financial documents you have so they don’t go missing. Examples would be credit cards, bank account and transaction statements, saving statements, loan papers, income tax papers, tax receipts, and tax deduction bills.

Property-Related Documents

During the moving process, you will accumulate a lot of documents like selling and buying agreements, lease copies, mortgage documents for your new and old home, insurance policies for your property, and more, all of which should be held on to during and after the move.

Driver’s License

Though the movers will most likely be driving the truck come moving day, you should still keep your driver’s license on you as you may need to provide it to set up new utility or cable service at your new home.

Medical Records for Your Kids

If your new home resides in a new school district, you should keep your kids’ medical and vaccination records on hand as new schools will require their medical records.

Cheque

Many service companies like electricians, painters, and plumbers still require cheques rather than more modern forms of payment. Keeping your chequebook on hand during the move is a must, as you will more than likely need it when hiring some of these contractors.

Proof of Residency

Proof of residency is often needed to set up your utilities or other services at your new home. Documents that show proof of residency are your lease, homeowners insurance policy, bank statements, paychecks, and more.

The excitement of moving may cause you to throw caution to the wind, but it is important to be prepared with all of the necessary documents to ensure the process goes as smoothly as possible.
